THE PARENT RETREAT
You don't have to pretend you're okay.
There are nights when the house is quiet and your mind is anything but.
You may be overwhelmed. Angry. Afraid. Guilty. Numb. Paranoid. Exhausted. Overthinking everything you've said, everything you've missed, and everything that might happen next.
You may even have thoughts you are afraid to admit out loud.
You are allowed to admit that you don't like how this feels.
You are not crazy for feeling this way.
You are a parent trying to understand a child whose needs may not look like anyone else's.
You don't need to solve everything tonight.
Start by noticing what is true.
DARK
When the thoughts get loud.
Sometimes the hardest part is being alone with your own mind.
You wonder if you're failing.
You wonder if something is wrong.
You replay the conversation from earlier.
You think about what other parents seem to be doing.
You imagine every possible outcome.
You feel angry, then guilty for being angry.
You feel afraid, then ashamed that you're afraid.
You love your child deeply and still don't like how this feels.
Both things can be true.
You are allowed to feel the hard thing without turning it into a verdict about who you are as a parent.
You don't have to shame yourself for having a feeling.
Name it.
Let it be real.
You don't have to fix it yet.
DUSK
You know something isn't right, but you don't know what to do.
This is the space between knowing and understanding.
Maybe you've noticed a pattern.
Maybe your child is struggling in a way that other children aren't.
Maybe the advice that works for everyone else keeps making things harder.
Maybe you have tried so many things that you don't know what to try next.
That uncertainty can make you question yourself.
But your child does not need to be exactly like another child for you to trust what you are seeing.
Your child is unique. Your situation is unique.
You are the person living inside it.
You know things about your child that no chart, comparison, or outside opinion can fully know.
You don't have to ignore what your heart is telling you simply because you don't yet know how to implement what you believe your child needs.
DAWN
We made it through another day.
Maybe nothing is solved.
Maybe tomorrow will still be hard.
But you made it here.
There is relief in realizing that you don't have to carry the whole future tonight.
Sometimes hope isn't a breakthrough.
Sometimes hope is simply:
We made it through today.
Tomorrow is another day.
I can try again.
I don't have to do this alone.
There may be a way forward that you cannot see yet.
You don't have to see the whole path.
Just stay.
LIGHT
You have help now.
Because you are here, you have help.
You are unique.
Your situation is unique.
You are the only person who knows what is truly in your heart, even if you are still unsure how to put that knowledge into action.
You don't have to have the right words.
You don't have to know exactly what your child needs yet.
You don't have to pretend you are stronger than you feel.
You can start by naming what is happening.
You can start by paying attention.
You can start by staying.
And you can let someone sit beside you while you figure out what comes next.
You are not alone with it anymore.
STAY WITH WHAT IS TRUE
You don't have to figure it all out tonight.
You don't have to make every feeling disappear.
You don't have to turn a difficult night into a lesson.
Just notice.
- —What am I feeling?
- —What am I afraid of?
- —What have I been trying not to admit?
- —What is my child showing me?
- —What do I know in my heart, even if I don't know what to do with it yet?
Name it.
Stay.
You are allowed to feel what you feel without shame.
And you don't have to carry it alone.
